Two recent articles tout erosion in Donald Trump’s base. It seems there are evangelicals who object to his profanity, his taking the Lord’s name in vain. It seems in a recent “speech” he said the word “goddamn”. More than once! Oh dear. Has Atlas shrugged, is the sky is falling? What is the matter with these people? Of all the hateful, mendacious, cruel and just plain stupid fecal matter that is routinely defecated from that man’s mouth, this is where they draw the line? Seriously? What, is their all-loving, all-merciful, all-just god going to zap his children because some of them use “bad language”? BTW, what kind of being wants to be worshipped by the likes of us? Just asking.
The second piece relates how some of his supporters in Iowa can no longer tolerate his “rhetoric”. C’mon man. What has he said lately that’s so much worse than what he was saying when they voted for him? Has word of the Hollywood Access Tape not reached Iowa? Or his mocking of Heidi Cruz, or his feud with the Gold Star family, or his preference for “people who weren’t captured”, or his impersonation of a disabled reporter, or his lying about birtherism? Now, he’s gone too far. Now, they’re drawing a line. Unless, of course, he cools off a bit. Then all will be swell again.
And if he doesn’t tone it down, why, they might have to vote for a Democrat! If only there was one who isn’t “too far left”. What? Too far left? What the hell are they talking about? Is it too far left to, say, defend (their) social security? Or Medicare? Oh wait. Maybe it’s Obamacare. Maybe trying to provide medical care to everyone is too leftish. Or a livable minimum wage. Or could it be taking care of vets and first responders? I’m just asking. It’s a “say when” thing. Let me know when I’ve crossed the line into the “far left”. Maybe it’s wanting to do something about innocent people and children getting gunned down in malls and schools. Maybe that’s too far left. Or treating people humanely who are trying to escape heinous regimes by seeking asylum in America? You know, the country with the statue that says something about taking your poor, your huddled masses. Screw that. Why should we treat them humanely when, after all, they are committing a misdemeanor?
What about a free college education? Is it leftist to want our kids to be educated, for America to be at the forefront of the arts and sciences? Or maybe it’s leftist not to saddle them with ridiculous debt?
Or could it be the climate and environment? Is it too far left to want to leave our progeny a livable planet? Maybe it’s too far left to care about the quality of our air and water? Or endangered species? Or the oceans. That could be it. Ain’t no seas near Iowa, goddammit. Yet. But, if I still haven’t crossed the line here’s one. This might do it. Sustainable energy, from the Sun, the wind, instead of good old fossil fuels. Not trashing the air with coal is so leftist.
Or could it be opposing gerrymandering and voter suppression? Or protecting our electoral process from foreign interference? Very leftist I bet. How about preventing future cheating on SCOTUS nominations or changing Senate rules so that a single Senator can’t deny the other 49, and their constituents, the opportunity to be heard on an issue? That’s gotta be leftist as all hell, right? And gee whiz, an independent Justice Department? Way over the line, that one.
But if not, how about gay rights and women’s rights? I bet now I’ve done it, now I’ve crossed the line. No conservative likes that shit, unless, of course, they happen to have a gay or lesbian child or something. But even then. Shit, some of them are gay themselves and oppose gay rights. Some of them are women and oppose the ERA!
But, in case I still haven’t gone too far left, try this one. This is Iowa, right? Farmers! It’s gotta be off-the-charts leftist to take farmers off of welfare and put them back to work by stopping Trump’s tariff war with China. Which reminds me, I also saw a third piece like this. An Iowa farmer bitching about his voting choices coming back to bite him on the ass. That’s what it takes for conservatives to finally get it. It has to hit them over the head, personally. When “conservativism” makes it into the DSM-6 one of the primary symptoms will be lack of empathy.
You know what? This is what’s wrong with America. It isn’t Donald Trump or Mitch McConnell or Fox News and Sean Hannity, as despicable as they all are. No, they’re just the symptoms. They are nothing more than the usual passel of amoral and venal opportunists shrewd enough to gull the citizens who can’t tell when smoke’s getting blown up their ass. Remember those folks who, when asked about the particulars of the ACA, approved of them, but when asked about Obamacare disapproved? That’s the problem. Suckers. People who drink the Fox/Breitbart, etc. Koolaid. People with dysfunctional bullshit detectors. The folks Mr. Mencken called the “booboisee” and “homo boobiens”.
